Spares range - our replacement timber jambs
Unless you are a joiner you perhaps don’t take a close look at the mechanism that makes up a door frame, and you probably don’t think too hard about how this works. But if you are installing a pocket door system it is important that you understand this, and can therefore acknowledge the importance of certain items. This includes the timber jambs that form an essential element of a door frame system.
Door frames are made up of the frame itself, but also a sill and a head and a set of door jambs. These all combine to ensure the door frame is functional and smooth in its operation, and that this is the case consistently and for many years. In this guide we will help you understand what door jambs are and why they are important in the design and installation of your pocket door system.
What are door jambs?
Door jambs are a set of timber pieces which are supplied as a kit with your pocket door system. They are installed on either side of the door frame as vertical pieces, they finish off your kit between the metal frame and timber door.
Why are door jambs important?
It is essential that a jamb is fitted perfectly vertical, ie. that it is ‘plumb’. If it is installed just a few degrees more or less than 90 degrees vertical, this will result in the door rubbing against the frame when it operates. This may not be immediately visible or noticeable, but over time will start to cause an issue. This can also mean that a bolt or other locking mechanism doesn’t align properly, which could cause a security issue. It is important to note that you should not assume that surrounding walls are perfectly ‘plumb’. So if this is the case, you should adjust the jambs accordingly, perhaps using shims to make sure they are perfectly vertical at 90 degrees.
You should also ensure that jambs are the same height and not too tall or narrow, as this could result in large gaps around the door, or at the other end of the scale, the door is too tight to the frame and there are no gaps at all. Ideally you want a nice, even and consistent gap around the door which enables easy operation and doesn’t cause issues with sound or air insulation. Good installation of your timber jambs should enable this.
Our range of timber door jambs
Timber jambs are supplied with each pocket door kit, but if these become damaged or worn, we do supply replacement timber jamb kits. These are designed to be installed only with the Eclisse Unico Classic pocket doors. They are for 35-44mm door thicknesses and can be supplied to suit a wall thickness ranging from 95mm to 125mm.
