What is a carrier kit?

When the pocket door is operated, ie. when it is opened or closed, it runs along an overhead rail. This is supplied as a standard part of the pocket door system, and consists of a track and rollers. Because this is a relatively simple design concept, this ‘carrier’ unit very rarely goes wrong. If you think about how many times you open and close a door each day, you need it to work consistently and without issue or awkwardness, so the entire design of a carrier system is built around this requirement to be simple, effective and reliable.

The carrier unit is a seal ball raced unit concealed within the track, and in its design stage this is tested over 1000 times. This can equate to roughly 25 years of use, so we know that the carrier kit is robust and can withstand many years of constant and repetitive use. In most cases, a replacement carrier kit is required due to the wrong item being ordered, or the kit has been lost, the only functional issue we hear about is a carrier kit being damaged because the pocket door system wasn’t installed properly. Any mis-alignment issues can damage the carrier system over time, and this isn’t immediately obvious. So problems can arise over time if this is not corrected and the carrier is being damaged with every opening and closing movement of the pocket door. This problem can be slow and gradual and means periodic inspection of your pocket door overhead rail system is important.

Our spare carrier kits

A replacement carrier kit supplied by Pocket Door Shop is suitable only for the Eclisse Unico Classic pocket doors. These are our most popular pocket door systems. The kit will consist of:

• two ball-raced rollers
• two top door brackets and fixing screws
• two door bolts,
• one adjustable stop
• one set of floor posts and fixing screws.

This carrier kit is for use on a single pocket door only, so if you have double pocket doors and you need to replace both carrier kits, then you will need to order two carrier kits. The replacement kits are designed for doors weighing up to 100Kgs, and can be suitable for wall thicknesses ranging from 95mm to 125mm. This covers the standard dimensions of most UK internal walls.

It is advisable to periodically inspect and maintain your pocket door system, even though its operation shouldn’t be affected by an extended period of use, as mentioned above when discussing the design testing regime. However, we recommend that you periodically inspect the rollers on the overhead rail by turning them and manually running them along the rail. You can also lubricate them if necessary, because this may be required after an extended period of use. This ensures that they are running smoothly and true, and therefore should continue to do so long term.
